Materials

Posts and rails: structural aluminum tubes, alloy 6061-T6, schedule 40, with a 1.9 in (48 mm) outside diameter and a 0.145 in (3.7 mm) wall thickness. Plastic end caps close the exposed tube ends. Aluminum combines excellent mechanical strength with high corrosion resistance. Connections: cast aluminum alloy 535 fittings connect the posts and rails. Stainless steel set screws tighten against the tubes to secure the connections. Freestanding bases and membrane protection: stackable ballast plates made of ASTM A-48 class 30 cast iron, each weighing 41.7 lb (18.91 kg) and measuring 12 × 16 in (305 × 406 mm). The weighted plates support the guardrail without penetrating the roof membrane or requiring attachment to the hatch. Protective mats placed beneath the plates help prevent damage to the roof membrane and underlying installation surfaces.
